Restoring the Fen
The Fen is a large inland wetland in the center of Weekapaug. It collects and filters rainwater from our roads and neighboring properties. This water entering the Fen includes chemicals from lawns and other pollutants deposited on our roads. These pollutants negatively impact the growth and diversity of native plant species in the Fen, and often enhance the productivity of non-native plants that thrive in these compromised environments.
Several years ago, with the help of a local organic gardener, we started a program to remove invasive plants and vines. As we carefully remove these invasive plants to prevent their spreading, we are planting native plants to “crowd out” non-native species. This project is a long-term undertaking of the WFC designed to ensure that the Fen continues to work effectively collecting and filtering water before it enters Block Island Sound near Fenway Beach.
